on our many trips down the pacific coast highway to visit the big sur area we've passed this mysterious lightstation on a distant outcropping protected by a locked gate. every time we passed it we wondered about its origins and history and commented that we should visit it one day... and that one day finally came last week on a beautiful sunny wednesday. waiting at the locked entrance with about 7 other vehicles, the gate was promptly unlocked at 1 pm and we were allowed to enter the protected area. for 3 hours we were led by our volunteer guide as we toured the facilities, learned about the interesting past of the lightstation, and took in amazing panoramic views. such a beautiful and interesting place to visit!
